The Climate Group

The Climate Group was formed in 2004 and has offices in London, New Delhi and New York. The organization’s mission is to ensure a world of no more than 1.5°C of global warming and greater prosperity for all. It aims to achieve this through bringing together powerful networks of businesses and governments to shift global markets and policies. The Climate Group acts as a catalyst to take innovation and solutions to scale and focuses on the areas with greatest global opportunities for change.

As the Secretariat of the Under2 Coalition, The Climate Group works with state and regional governments, so our work supports climate projects and finance at the city level as well.

We recently completed a project in Colombia that connects climate project developers with expert financial institutions to make their projects more bankable and explore how they can leverage blended finance opportunities. We also run peer-learning programs that support regional governments in sharing best practice and innovative policies, including one on industrial emissions reduction through which governments will explore financing options for implementing mitigation policies. We hope to expand these efforts in the near future.

The Under2 Coalition brings together more than 220 governments who represent over 1.3 billion people and 43% of the global economy. Governments can join the coalition as signatories to or endorsers of the Under2 MOU. The Under2 Coalition is managed by The Climate Group. (Image source – Under2 Coalition)

We are always looking for ways to collaborate with other organizations committed to a low-carbon future. Please reach out to Sarah Duffy (sduffy@theclimategroup.org) if you would like to hear about potential opportunities.

We participate in a number of international forums on climate change that have subcommittees on finance. We are hoping that participating in the Alliance will help us stay informed as well!

We hope that the Alliance will connect us with other actors in this space doing good work with whom we can potentially collaborate. We also hope to learn more about specific tools that we can share with our member governments and that will serve as an extra resource for them.

We expect to provide perspective on, and real-life examples of, the policy issues that state and regional governments face in supporting climate finance at the municipality level. We also hope that we can offer opportunities for vertical integration of policy approaches so that city and state governments are building on and supporting one another’s work. Working together in this way will help us to achieve more for our climate, particularly now that we have entered the crucial Climate Decade where our mutual ambition needs to be stronger than ever.
