Global Infrastructure Basel

Global Infrastructure Basel Foundation (GIB) is a non-profit organization based in Basel, Switzerland. GIB promotes sustainable, resilient and regenerative infrastructure, including Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and youth engagement expertise on a global scale. Active since 2008, we work with multiple stakeholders ranging from city representatives to project developers and infrastructure financiers, among others. In addition, GIB frequently engages in partnerships/ consortia for EU and international proposals. We envision a world where sustainable and resilient infrastructure is the norm rather than an exception.

The GIB mission is to accelerate a mainstream transition to sustainable, resilient and regenerative infrastructure.

The GIB vision is a world in which investments in social, economic and physical infrastructure lead to inclusive, sustainable and resilient communities and ecosystems.

FAST-Infra Label and FAST-Infra Access Programme

The FAST-Infra Label provides a credible and consistent framework to identify sustainable and resilient infrastructure projects, helping cities improve project transparency and sustainability performance. By aligning with globally recognized criteria, the label enhances the visibility and credibility of urban infrastructure initiatives, making them more understandable and potentially more attractive to investors. This supports cities in their efforts to access climate finance and advance sustainable development goals.Infrastructure in a changing world series

The FAST-Infra Access Programme supports cities in accessing climate finance by covering verification costs linked to the FAST-Infra Label. By reducing this upfront financial barrier, the programme enables more urban infrastructure projects—especially in emerging markets—to demonstrate their sustainability credentials and strengthen their position when engaging with potential financiers.

Infrastructure in a Changing World

The “Infrastructure in a Changing World” Global Event Series 2025–26 is an initiative led by the GIB to drive systemic change in the global infrastructure ecosystem. It supports cities’ access to climate finance by creating a high-impact platform that promotes sustainable, resilient infrastructure and addresses critical financing gaps. The series convenes key actors—including city officials, investors, policymakers, and standard-setters—to align around actionable solutions and financing strategies. Through multi-format, regionally grounded events, it strengthens cities’ capacity to design bankable, climate-resilient infrastructure projects, foster investor confidence, and contribute to the scaling of climate finance at the local level.

NATALIE

The NATALIE project supports cities’ access to climate finance by advancing nature-based solutions (NBS) that enhance resilience to climate change. By developing scalable, co-created models and offering tools like the Booster Innovation Package—which includes technical, governance, and financing support—NATALIE helps cities design bankable, sustainable infrastructure projects. These approaches strengthen cities’ ability to demonstrate impact and attract investment for climate adaptation and resilience.

GIB stays informed about city-level climate finance by actively engaging with key partners such as C40 Cities, ICLEI, the Global Covenant of Mayors, Climate Policy Initiative, and NetZeroCities. These organizations or initiatives provide valuable insights through research, technical guidance, events, and tools that help GIB track emerging financing mechanisms, policy developments, and implementation models. By following their work, participating in knowledge-sharing forums, and collaborating on common priorities, GIB ensures its approach remains aligned with the latest trends and best practices in urban climate finance.

GIB has greatly benefited from its engagement with the CCFLA through access to valuable tools, insights, and collaborative opportunities. The PPF database has been particularly useful for identifying support for project preparation. CCFLA meetings and events—especially those ahead of UNFCCC COPs and other high-level moments—have provided valuable coordination platforms. GIB has also stayed informed on the latest trends, barriers, and opportunities in city-level climate finance, while contributing to and learning from Action Groups like PPAG and PSAG. Networking and knowledge-sharing during events such as New York Climate Week and virtual sessions have further enriched GIB’s work, fostering alignment with peers and advancing common goals.

GIB has actively contributed to CCFLA, particularly through its leadership and expertise in project preparation. GIB’s CEO, Louis Downing, serves as one of the 2025 Co-Chairs of the Project Preparation Action Group (PPAG), continuing the organization’s longstanding engagement. GIB played a key role in the early development of the PPAG, including mapping existing project preparation groups, and has also co-authored a report on project preparation. Through these efforts, GIB has helped shape CCFLA’s agenda and advance solutions to accelerate climate finance for cities.
